Recently, a company in Britain conducted a survey of employed individuals that asked what their employers knew about the people who worked for them in regards to their lives outside of the workplace. The results were surprising and offered some great insight into how employers can benefit from engaging and learning more about their employees.
The survey revealed that a large proportion of bosses didn’t know the names of their employees’ children or the occupation of their spouses. Employer’s knowledge of their workers interests outside their job was low as well. In places where knowledge was low, employee engagement was considered low as well, resulting in lower overall performance of the business. While information like child’s names and partner’s jobs may not seem relevant to your business, the company that conducted the survey argues that is it. We agree!
By learning information about your employees that may not necessarily seem pertinent to the business, it does create a sense for employees that their bosses are interested in them beyond simply their ability to perform a job, making them more committed to the business as a whole. They’ll feel greater job satisfaction and be more likely to commit themselves to the long-term success of the company, through innovative ideas and a willingness to accept change.
You’ll also be able to save time and money in your recruitment process, simply because you’ll find that you won’t be filling openings as often. Committed and engaged workers are far more likely to stay with business for a longer time over those who feel otherwise.
An employee survey that gathers information about the individual outside of work, as well as their feelings towards their job, can help identify for you ways to better engage your workers to ensure you’re getting the best results out of them. They’ll treat their jobs as more than just a means to a paycheque and you’ll be able to reap the benefits of a happier, more engaged workforce.
